Wheelchair basketball progress impresses UGI
United General Insurance (UGI) Company has expressed delight at the strides wheelchair basketball has made in Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) over the past two months.
UGI chief executive officer Bywell Chiwoni made the statement after monitoring Sozobal wheelchair basketball clinic at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on Saturday.

The day-long clinic, which saw basketball trainer Chiko Magomero drilling over 30 people with disabilities, is one of the initiatives aimed at preparing Sozobal wheelchair basketball teams for the UGI-sponsored K3.5 million tournament from October 14.
“Unlike a few weeks ago when the players struggled to dribble and shoot, they are now able to do that with ease and quicker. This is a small, but significant improvement as we approach the throwing off of the league this October. So far so good,” Chiwoni said.
Physically challenged player Thoko Goodson said through the skills obtained during a number of clinics and games, he is now able play the unique sport without breaking the rules.
Sozobal spokesperson Geoffrey Banda thanked UGI for the financial backing, saying it will go a long way in promoting self-esteem and improve physical health among the disabled. n
